EXCURSION TO "LOIKAW" INHABITED BY 'LONG-NECKED' WOMEN'
The Padaung Hill Tribe (Kayan ethnic group) is an ethnic minority in Myanmar which has been made famous by the brass neck rings. According to the legend, the origin of the practice is that the rings protected the women from tiger attacks (OR) to remind them of their ancestry to the mythical dragon. The rings also play a social role, with more rings serving as a symbol of status for women. About age 5, girls were introduced to the first neck ring. As they grew, rings were added. Their shoulders were pushed down, making the neck look longer. A woman wore up to twenty pounds of rings on her neck and even more on her calves! A fully stretched neck was approx. 10-15" long! At the surrounding village of Loikaw, you can see the natural lifestyle of Padaung Hill Tribe relying on subsistence farming and crafts to survive.
